To reduce processing load, FIG. 9 is representative of a filter configuration of the present invention. Essentially, a receive (460) and/or transmit (455) chain contains a multl-rate filter (456, 462) configured as a decimator or interpolator, respectively. In use, the multi-rate filter (456, 462) provides approximation of a desired impulse frequency response characteristic: (e g. root-raised cosine) within a radio frequency signal processing chain The multi-rate filter (456, 462) may be cocatenated (in series) with a conventional FIR filter (458, 464), such that the respective falters provide an anti-alias function and a band-pass function having well-defined impulse response characteristics. Signals either incident to a multi rate interpolator or exiting from a multi-rate decimator are at about a factor of three times the symbol/chip rate and preferably at about twice the symbol/chip rate. Consequently. the FIR filter (458, 464) operates at a low sampling rate with respect to the multi-rate filter, with the FIR filter provide RRC (or other desired characteristic) spectral shaping.
