DIGITAL SCALE Abstract This invention relates to an improved digital scale arrangement which employs apparatus for generating an electrical analog signal representing the weight on a scale mechanism. The analog voltage is then inverted to a digital representation of the weight on the scale under control of a microprocessor or microcomputer. The microcomputer then further processes the digital representation of the weight on the scale and causes an indication to be displayed on a display arrangement. In accordance with the present invention, an automatically operating over all and combined verification arrangement is provided for verifying the correct operation of both the analog portion and the converting portion and the digital portions of the system. In order to verify the operation of the entire arrangement, a verifying signal of predetermined magnitude is injected into the analog portion of the system. This signal passes through the analog portion and then is converted by the A to D converter to a digital signal representing a same value. This digital signal is then compared with a predetermined reference digital signal corresponding to the predetermined analog signal injected in the analog portion of the system. If the two digital signals correspond then the analog verification test is considered satisfactory and the scale is thereafter available for another weight measurement. If the correspondence between the two signals is greater than the first predetermined range but less than the second range, then a stored span control factor is modified so that when the weight, multiplied by this span control factor, will more nearly correspond with the stored value of the corresponding digital value of the analog signal injected in the system. Thereafter the verification routines are repeated until the two digital weights correspond within the predetermined tolerance of limits. During this time an analog verifying indication is displayed on a display apparatus. If the correspondence between the two digital weight signals is greater than the second predetermined tolerance limits then an error signal is displayed and the scale rendered inoperative until power is removed or until the difficulty is corrected. Provision has also been made to initiate an overall combined verification signal by means of an AV key which may be manually operated by the scale attendant. The response to the operation of this key is substantially the same as to the automatic initiation of the verification cycle as described above.
