A carrier wave phase-modulated signal having 2M states, M being an integer, is demodulated by converting it into a quadrature two-way baseband signal by multiplying it by a local osciallator signal (20) at the translated carrier frequency, and digitising the baseband signal by sampling it at the modulating signal clock frequency. The signal clock is recovered by setting the phase of a bit frequency stabilised local clock (32) and seeking the minimum inter-symbol interference before recovering the carrier.
