Abstract A signal acquisition instrument comprises a storage device for storing a stream of items of waveform information relating to an input signal in item by item fashion. The storage device is oper- able to store an additional item of information in either a first mode, in which the additional item is stored without erasing items of information that have previously been stored, or in a second mode, in which the additional item is stored and concur- rently the oldest item that still remains in the storage device is erased. The instrument also comprises a trigger device for defining a mode change event, and a controller for causing the storage device to operate in the first mode during an initial portion of an acquisition interval, in the second mode after expiration of the initial portion and until a mode change event has occurred, and in the first mode after the mode change event has occurred and until the end of the acquisition interval.
