ABSTRACT In a digital telephone exchange for areas of low subscriber density, a connection network of subscriber cir- cuits able to supply signalling and speech in PCM code, signal generators for generating synchronism and timing sig- nals, and a control system to control the development of the connections. The control system consists of a plurality of control units, each adapted to carry out one or more tele- phone functions concerning the control of the connection among subscribers; to control a limited position of the traffic generated by the subscribers connected with the ex- change; to examine and satisfy in allotted time-phase the interconnect requests received from other units or subscri- bers; and to communicate with other units by utilizing as connection path the connection network.
