ABSTRACT A time-division multiple pulse code modulation system is described. In the system a serial input data bit stream is converted into a parallel n bit stream. The bit rate of the parallel n bit stream is used to produce an additional time slot per every predetermined number of data bits. A service bit for frame synchronization and an auxiliary data are inserted in the additional time slot in accordance with a predetermined interval to produce parallel n service-bit-inserted bit streams. Mutually corresponding parallel n bits of the parallel n service bit-inserted bit streams are converted into parallel m bits to produce m bit streams. The parallel m bit streams are multiplexed into a single output bit stream. The invention enables stable operation by insuring block synchronisation by frame synchronization.
