The present application relates to a device and method for processing a digital value to thereby determine an estimate of the square of said digital value. This is done by linearly approximating the square function with the help of anchor points that are powers of 2, such that the estimate of the square of a digital value xa is determined on the basis of a first processing value 2i, where 2i <=xa ~2i+1, and a second processing value (3xa - 2i+1). The present invention is advantageous in that it allows simple processing steps and a simple processing hardware. It is preferably applied to the mean signal power estimation of a digital signal being sent to a transmitter.

L'invention concerne un dispositif et un procédé de traitement d'une valeur numérique, servant à déterminer une estimation du carré de cette valeur. Ce procédé consiste à déterminer une approximation linéaire de la fonction carré au moyen de points d'ancrage qui sont des puissances de 2, de façon que l'estimation du carré d'une valeur numérique x¿a? soit déterminée en fonction d'une première valeur de traitement 2?i¿, dans laquelle 2?i¿<=x¿a?~2?i+1¿, et d'une seconde valeur de traitement (3x¿a? 2?i+1¿). La présente invention est avantageuse en ce qu'elle permet des étapes et un matériel de traitement, simples. De préférence, on applique ce procédé à l'estimation moyenne de la puissance signal d'un signal numérique en cours d'envoi vers un émetteur.
