This invention discloses a digital video system for use in a LAN. The system comprises a video digitizer for receiving and digitizing a plurality of analog video inputs. A mixer receives the plurality of digitized video signals for spatially mixing the signals in real time into a single frames of a predetermined n by m pixel images. The digitized images are coupled to a video compressor for compressing each of the single frame images transmitting the images on a LAN to a receiver. The receiver decompresses the transmitted images for near real time display. In a preferred embodiment, the compression used is wavelet compression.
