An interior trim panel, such as a headliner, formed by a substrate composed of a fibrous or porous batt material, such as polyethylene terephthalate (PET). The substrate includes a first, back side and second, front side. In order to increase the strength of the substrate, dimples or impressions are formed in the back side of the substrate and corresponding projections are formed extending from the opposite front side by simultaneously compressing both sides of the fibrous batt material. A structural layer of material is then attached to the substrate, preferably to the projections of the substrate, resulting in an "I-beam" structure that further enhances the strength of the interior trim panel. In another embodiment, a second layer of fibrous or porous batt material may be placed between the projections before fixedly attaching the structural layer of material to the substrate.

L'invention concerne un panneau de garnissage int~rieur, tel qu'une garniture de pavillon form~e par un substrat compos~ d'une mati­re isolante poreuse ou fibreuse, telle que le poly~thyl­ne t~r~phthalate (PTE). Ce substrat comprend un premier cÙt~ arri­re et un second cÙt~ avant. En vue d'accro¹tre la r~sistance du substrat, des d~pressions ou des impressions sont form~es sur le cÙt~ arri­re du substrat et des bossages correspondantes sont form~s et s'~tendent du cÙt~ avant oppos~ par compression simultan~e des deux cÙt~s de la mati­re isolante fibreuse. Une couche structurelle de mati­re est alors fix~e sur le substrat, de pr~f~rence sur les bossages du substrat, ce qui d~bouche sur une structure de <= poutre en I >= am~liorant la r~sistance du panneau de garnissage int~rieur. Dans un autre mode de r~alisation, une seconde couche de mati­re isolante fibreuse peut Útre dispos~e entre les bossages, avant fixation de la couche structurelle de mati­re sur le substrat.
