ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A direct current power supply is provided that supplies a relatively high current at low voltage to a load requiring a constant value of real power over a predetermined range of output voltages. The supply includes a three phase diode rectifier bridge connected across the load in parallel with a three phase thyristor rectifier bridge also connected across the load. The thyristor bridge has its alternating current inputs connected to secondary winding output terminals of a three phase transformer. The diode bridge has its alternating current inputs connected to intermediate tapped portions of the three phases so as to provide a predetermined minimum value of voltage for the range of voltage. The remaining voltages in the range are attainable by phase control of the thyristor bridge. The novel power supply results in an improved power factor and reduced reactive power requirements for the supply.
