ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Transpyloric treatment of small bowel inflammation (eg Crohn's disease) by topical application of anti-inflammatory agents such as 5-ASA, 4-ASA or 3-ASA has hitherto been by oral administration of tablets the accurate targeting of which, in the variable environment of the gut, has been impossible. Now, by using an enteric feeding tube, an effective amount of an agent like 5-ASA may be delivered directly to the inflamed segment of the gastrointestinal tract in patients suffering from inflammatory bowel disease whereby the agent is brought into direct, topical contact with inflamed mucosa while avoiding prior degradation in the stomach.
