ABSTRACT An analog-to-digital converter for continuously tracking and digitally encoding a variable analog input signal according to a logarithmic encoding scheme, including a comparator which compares the variable analog signal with a reference signal provided by a reference circuit and provides output signals indicating the difference in the values of the reference signal and the variable analog signal, An up/down counter, controlled by the output signals, is selectively incremented or decremented during an encoding interval in accordance with the difference between the compared signals to provide a digital code signal, and the reference circuit is controlled by the code signals and the comparator output signals to continuously modify the reference signal until time analog signal sample is "caught", at which time the code signals provided by the counter represent a compressed PCM code for an analog signal sample.
