ABSTRACT A fuel injected internal combustion engine and a method of operating same, the engine having a fuel injection system (81) wherein fuel is injected through a selectively openable injector nozzle (142) directly into a combustion chamber (91) of the engine by gas from a pressurised gas supply system(71, 83, 85). While the engine is being cranked, during start-up of the engine, the injector nozzle is opened to communicate said combustion chamber (91) with the gas supply system (71, 83, 85). The gas supplied from the combustion chamber (91) to the gas supply system (71, 83, 85) establishes an adequate pressure for effective operation of the fuel injection system (81).
