A direct lighting sys-tem and method is provided that in-cludes a plurality of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) secured within a light fixture. The lighting system further includes a diffusive transmissive ele-ment adapted to transmit light from the LEDs therethrough and provide diffused light to an area requiring il-lumination.
