Improvements to non-acid fuel methanol fuel cells (10) include new formulations for the materials used therein. The anode (14) includes platinum and rithenium uniformly mixed together. Other materials may be substituted for these metals. The cathode (16) is made of platinum particles, and is bonded to a side of the solid polymer electrolyte membrane (18). The backing material for the fuel electrode is treated to improve its characteristics. An extremely porous electrode made by sputtering is also disclosed.

Les perfectionnements apportés à des piles à combustible (10) fonctionnant au méthanol et ne nécessitant pas d'acide portent sur de nouvelles formulations de matériau utilisés pour ces piles. L'anode (14) contient du platine et du ruthénium mélangés ensemble d'une manière uniforme. D'autres produits peuvent remplacer ces métaux. La cathode (16) est faite de particules de platine et elle est fixée à un côté de la membrane (18) à électrolyte polymère solide. Le matériau de support de l'électrode à combustible est traité pour améliorer ses propriétés. L'invention concerne également une électrode extrêmement poreuse obtenue par pulvérisation cathodique.
