ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Disclosed is a direct numerically controlled positioning attachment for a pattern cam following ophthalmic lens periphery grinder of the pattern cam type. The actual physical position of the existing sizing adjustment mechanism of the grinder is sensed, the existing sizing adjustment mechanism determining the position of a lens edge relative to the grinding wheel. An actual position signal is produced indicative of the sensed actual position of the existing sizing adjusting mechanism on the grinder. A desired position signal, indicative of the desired position of the lens edge relative to the grinding, is received from a computer and the desired position signal and the actual position signal, are compared and produce an error signal indicative of any error between the desired position signal and the actual position signal. Mechanical motion is produced from the error signal, and transmitted to the existing sizing adjustment mechanism of the grinder thereby causing the actual position signal to become equal to the desired position signal, thereby causing the error signal to become zero. The transmission of mechanical motion positions the existing sizing adjustment mechanism and consequently the lens edge to the desired position relative to the grinding wheel. The axial position of a lens to be ground by the grinder is sensed and an axial position signal is indicative of said sensed axial position of a lens to be ground is produced. The axial position signal is communicated to the computer thereby allowing the control computer to provide the desired position signal which corresponds to the axial position of the lens to be ground.
