ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: Smelting is effected in a reactor containing juxtaposed oxidizing and reducing zones each containing a slag bath and a gas space above the bath. The slag baths and gas spaces of the two zones respectively communicate with each other. The ores to be smelted are fed into the slag bath in the oxidizing zone and an oxygen-containing gas is blown into this slag bath. The slag which is formed in the oxidizing zone and is rich in non-ferrous metal oxides, is passed from this oxidizing zone into the reducing zone. In this reducing zone, a reducing agent and an oxygen- containing gas are blown into the slag at such respective rates that the non-ferrous metal oxides contained in the slag are substantially completely reduced and a phase that is rich in non-ferrous metal is formed. The slag which is so formed and is poor in non-ferrous metal is tapped from the reducing zone. The gases in the oxidizing and reducing zones are separately sucked from these two zones at pressures which are so controlled that a zero differential pressure is obtained adjacent to the boundary between the oxidizing and reducing zones. This process is particularly interesting in that, whenever necessary, the adjacent portions of the gas spaces in the oxidizing and reducing zones can be intercon- nected to allow withdrawal of the flue gas from either zone through the other.
