ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for monitoring the number of persons or objects passing through a passageway comprises at least one emitter-detector unit for producing a pair of electromagnetic beams in longitudinally spaced relation across the passageway and predetermined output signals when the beams are interrupted, a circuit for producing digital output signals representative of the current values of the outputs of the emitter-detector unit, and a microprocessor for monitoringthe digital output signals at predetermined timed intervals and recording predetermined particulars of any interruptions of the pair of beams.
