A thermochromatic external liquid level gauge and method is provided which is directly applied to the outside surface of the outside wall of a container, for use in the determination of the level of the interface between a mass of flowable material and the void volume above it within a container. The thermochromatic external liquid level gauge vertically extends along substantially the entire length of the container. It comprises at least two thermochromatic materials which are directly applied to the outside wall by such application methods as painting, silk screening, stencilling, molding, crayon transfer, pencil transfer, screening, and combinations thereof. Each of the thermochromatic materials responds chromatically within a different operating temperature range. In an alternative embodiment, the thermochromatic external liquid level gauge further includes a substrate having a series of indicia printed thereon, in which the substrate is directly applied to the outside surface of the outside wall of the container.
