ABSTRACT A disc brake assembly is described which includes a rotor, a cylinder housing, a brake pad carrier displaceably mounted on the housing, and pistons mounted on the housing for displacing the pad into engagement with the rotor. The disc brake assembly is characterized by a brake pad being tapered in width along its length, the brake pad having an inner surface positioned adjacent to the rotor and being mounted on the carrier such that a leading edge of the pad which is first swept by the rotor when rotating in a forward direction, is wider than a trailing edge of the pad, so that the taper is oriented in a direction of forward rotor rotation such that an area of the pad adjacent to the leading edge is greater than an area adjacent to the trailing edge, whereby even wear of the inner surface of the pad is promoted. Accordingly, the brake-engageable surface of the pad is at its greatest in the areas that are most subject to wear and the frictional wear on the pad is spread more evenly over the length of the pad.
