DISC DRIVE SYSTEM HAVING A PLURALITY OF LARGE SIZED MAGNETIC DISCS DRIVEN BY A DIRECTLY COUPLED DC BRUSHLESS MOTOR ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A disc drive system in which a plurality of large sized rigid magnetic discs are driven by a DC brushless motor and wherein a blower wheel also driven by the DC brushless motor is used to create a flow of air for use in removing heat generated in the operation of the electrical and mechanical components in the system is disclosed. The DC brushless motor includes a cup shaped rotor having a plurality of magnets on its side wall and a stator having a series of windings on a core. The rotor is attached directly to a spindle on which the discs are mounted and the stator is mounted on a spindle housing for supporting the spindle. The stator is located radially inward from the magnets on the rotor so that the magnets rotate outside the stator. The blower wheel is attached directly to the rotor. The flow of air created by the blower wheel as the rotor turns is channeled by a duct assembly so as to pass from the front of the system to the rear between a frame on which the electrical and mechanical components are mounted and a cover assembly which surrounds the frame. The construction and mounting arrangement of the rotor and stator enable the DC brushless motor to generate the torque needed to drive the discs and the blower wheel while the blower wheel in combination with the duct assembly provide a very efficient arrangement for producing a flow of air for cooling purposes. -1-
