It is known that one can alter the spectral output of certain discharge lamps by the application of pulsed waveforms rather than simple sinusoidal ones. This effect has been used in the past to make fluorescent lamps of variable colour output. In the invention short pulses (about 1µS) at a frequency of about 5 kHz are applied to a discharge lamp such as the low-pressure mercury/argon lamp in order to shift the ratio of the intensities of two of the mercury lines, in particular the 254 nm and 365 nm lines, of which for sinusoidal application the 254 nm line is predominant, towards the higher wavelength. This greatly increases the efficiency of a lamp using phosphors excited by these UV emissions, because of the reduced Stokes shift.

On sait qu'on peut modifier la sortie spectrale de certaines lampes à décharge par application d'ondes pulsées plutôt que d'ondes sinusoïdales simples. On a utilisé cet effet dans le passé afin de fabriquer des lampes fluorescentes à sorties de couleurs variables. L'invention consiste à appliquer des impulsions courtes (environ 1µS) à une fréquence d'environ 5 kHz à une lampe à décharge, telle qu'une lampe au mercure/argon basse pression, de manière à déplacer le rapport des intensités de deux des lignes de mercure, en particulier, les lignes de 254 nm et 365 nm, parmi lesquelles la ligne de 254 nm est prédominante pour une application d'ondes sinusoïdales, vers la longueur d'onde la plus élevée. Ceci permet d'augmenter considérablement l'efficacité de la lampe au moyen de luminophores excités par ces émissions d'ultraviolets, à cause de la limitation du déplacement de Stokes.
