Disclosed is a process for inhibiting the formation of discoloration in an aqueous composition selected from the group consisting of water-based paint, adhesive, caulk and sealant compositions, and combinations thereof, wherein said discoloration is caused by the presence of ferric ion or cupric ion together with pyrithione in said composition. The process comprises contacting the composition with a discoloration-inhibiting amount of a zinc compound selected from the group consisting of zinc salts of organic acids, zinc salts of inorganic acids, zinc hydroxide, zinc oxide, and combinations thereof. Also disclosed is an aqeous antimicrobial composition protected against discoloration attributable to the presence of ferric ion or cupric ion therein.

Cette invention concerne un procédé visant à empêcher la décoloration dans des compositions aqueuses du groupe suivant: compositions de peintures, d'adhésifs, de calfeutrage et d'étanchéité à base d'eau, ainsi que leur combinaisons, la décoloration dans ces compositions étant due à la présence d'ions de fer ou d'ions de cuivre et de pyrithione. Ce procédé consiste à mettre la composition en contact avec une quantité suffisante pour empêcher la décoloration, d'un composé de zinc du groupe suivant: sels de zinc d'acides organiques, sels de zinc d'acides non organiques, hydroxyde de zinc, oxyde de zinc, ainsi que leur combinaisons. Cette invention concerne également une composition aqueuse antimicrobienne non sujette à la décoloration due à la présence d'ions de fer ou d'ions de cuivre.
