The disconnector is provided for a metal encapsulated, gas insulated high voltage switchgear. It has a housing (1) with at least two axes (2, 3) which intersect at a first angle (.alpha.). In addition, it has two contact carriers (32, 28, 46) which are arranged on a first axis (3) of these axes and are positioned by means of securing elements, with a distance, configured as an isolating distance, between the two contact carriers (32, 28, 46). The intention is to provide a disconnector for a metal encapsulated, gas insulated high voltage switchgear whose dimensions are comparatively small in the axial direction and in which all the varieties of disconnector can be installed in a housing which is of identical construction for every variety. This is achieved in that the first axis (3) and a second axis (2) each form an axis of symmetry of the housing (1), and in that the housing (1) has at least four openings (4, 5, 6, 7) which are provided with flanges (8, 9, 10, 11), which have the same diameter and whose center is located on one of the two axes (2, 3) and which are arranged at the same distance from the intersection point of the two axes (2, 3).
