A dishwasher has a basin (1) in which there is a rotating agitator (4), fed by a water jet (5) coming out a nozzle (6). The agitator is supported by a removable basket (3), which is adjustable in height. Associated with the agitator is a collection conduit (8), which has an aperture (9) on an upper side surface. A deflector (11), activated by a water jet (5), closes the aperture (9) when the basket is in it normal operating position, in which the nozzle (6) and the collection conduit (8) are aligned. The water jet does not drag air into the collection conduit that feeds the agitator, so that operation of the machine is silenced.
