Abstract The present invention relates to the use of aqueous compositions at ambient temperatures to clean, disinfect and preserve contact lenses. It has been a problem that when prior aqueous compositions contain anti-microbial constituents at active concentrations, these constituents tend to be absorbed or concentrated by the lens (particularly soft contact lenses), resulting in damage to the lens or harm to the eye of the user. The present invention provides a composition that is active against a wide variety of microorganisms yet is compatible with soft contact lenses as well as non-irritating and safe for contact with the human eye. The composition includes glyceryl monolaurate in combination with one or more other anti-microbial agents, and optionally an organic surfactant, for use in a solution for cleaning, disinfecting and preserving contact lenses.
