ABSTRACT The invention relates to compositions and a method for disinfecting contact lenses by treating the lenses with a solution containing a chlorine release agent other than dichloroisocyanurate in an amount of from 1 to 10 ppm by weight of said chlorine release agent measured as available chlorine in said solution. Preferably the chlorine release agent is N-chlorosuccinimide or a water-soluble N-phenyl chlorosulphonamide such as 4-carboxyl phenyl N-chlorosulphonamide and salts thereof, phenyl N-chlorosulphonamide and 4-methyl phenyl N-chlorosulphonamide.
