ABSTRACT A rapid and efficient method for disinfection of waste liquid such as sewage effluent by means of a fluid disinfecting agent (e.g., ozone or chlorine), in which the disinfecting agent and all of the waste liquid to be treated are continuously passed through a turbulent mixing zone having a mixing rate of at least about 5 seconds -1 which is produced by introducing a motive stream of a minor portion of the waste liquid into an induction zone supplied with the major portion of the waste liquid, within a limited period of time under specified conditions to provide a bacterial kill of at least 99.9 percent and a viral kill rate of at least 99 percent. Also disclosed is specific apparatus for carrying out the method.
