The present invention relates to a disinfector and a process for disinfecting polluted water to supply sanitized water, such as drinking or swimming water, or industrial water. The disinfector and process according to the invention disinfects water by using CIO2 as a disinfectant, of which the electrolysis generator comprises an anode electrolysis cell and a cathode electrolysis cell with an anode, a neutral electrode and a cathode, respectively. There is a sensing element arranged in the reactor for disinfection for detecting CIO2 content in disinfected water. And a monitor unit adjusts the voltage and current intensity supplied to the anode of the electrolysis generator in response to the resulting signal from the sensing element so as to continuously obtain satisfactory effect for disinfecting water in lower electric consumption and avoid tedious work for counting and assaying.
