PHN. 9530 7 ABSTRACT: A dispenser cathode comprises a heating ele- ment and a compressed cathode body consisting of a porous metal body containing 1-15% by weight of a material for dispensing barium, barium oxide and scandium oxide; this material is essentially Ba2Sc2O5 and is composed of 68-72% of BaO and 32-28% of Sc2O3, any BaO in excess of the stoichiometric proportion being in solid solution. Such a cathode can provide a current density greater than 6 A/Sq.cm. at a temperature of 1000°C or less with a life of more than 3000 hours.
