ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Novel azo dyes having the general formula (I): Image (I) where A is the residue of a diazotizable base or a coupling base incorporating a N-dialkylamine group, X is =NH or =O, R, and R2 are hydrogen, methyl, oxymethyl or chlorine and R3 and R4 are methyl or ethyl, are prepared from novel intermediate cyanacetanilide compounds by reaction with the corresponding p-N-alkylamino-salicyl-aldehyde. They are useful especially for dyeing synthetic hydrophobic fibres such as polyesters.
