The phase modulator in the laser resonator requires both at the input and at the output defined linearly polarized light which has to be generated. Hitherto, this was brought about in a complex and expensive manner using polarization actuators. The invention provides a combination of dispersion compensation and definition of the linear polarization state in a dispersion compensation fibre (PM-DC fibre) which is birefringent at such a high level that only the two orthogonal linear polarization states can be diffused therein. The invention can be used for mode-locked fibre lasers in which the time pulse width has to be as small as possible.

Dans le résonateur laser, le modulateur de phase exige, à l'entrée comme à la sortie, une lumière polarisée et définie qui doit être produite. Cette opération onéreuse et complexe était jusque là réalisée à l'aide d'un régleur de polarisation. Selon l'invention, on procède à la combinaison de la compensation de dispersion et de la définition de l'état de polarisation linéaire dans une fibre à compensation de dispersion (fibre PM-DC) dont la réfraction double est telle que seuls les deux états de polarisation orthogonaux linéaires peuvent se propager à l'intérieur de ladite fibre. L'invention est destinée aux lasers à fibre à modes bloqués pour lesquels la largeur d'impulsion temporelle doit être la plus petite possible.
