Dispersion compensation is applied to an optical signal first by a coarse compensation applied to the signal multiplex on a communications network and then by a fine adjustable compensation applied to individual signal channels dropped from the network. The error rate is measured, for example using forward error correction, and the dispersion compensation set to minimise the error rate.

Selon l'invention, une compensation de la dispersion est appliquée à un premier signal optique d'abord par une compensation approximative appliquée au signal multiplex sur un réseau de communication, puis par une fine compensation réglable appliquée à des canaux de signal individuel ségrégué du réseau. Le taux d'erreurs est mesuré, par exemple, au moyen de la correction d'erreurs sans voie de retour, et la compensation de la dispersion est réglée pour réduire au minimum le taux d'erreurs.
