The preparation of dispersion polymers based on ethylen- ically unsaturated monomers and containing at least 1% by weight of specific monomer units comprising esters or amides of ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids which are capable of (co)polymerization and contain urethane groups in the ester or amide radicals, by emulsion, sus- pension or bead polymerization or copolymerization initiated by means of free radicals, and the use thereof, if appropriate in aqueous dispersion form, as coating agents, adhesives, molded plastics and as binders, thickeners and auxiliaries in industrial chemical pre- parations.
