This invention relates to a polymer foam prepared by dispersing on organophilic multi-layered material into a melt comprising an olefinic or styrenic polymer having polar functionality so that at least a portion of the polymer intercalates between layers of the particles; and expanding the polymer with a blowing agent under such condition to form the polymer foam. The organophilic multi-layered material can also be dispersed into an olefinic or styrenic monomer, which can then be polymerized to form a polymer melt prior to, or along with the foaming step.

Cette invention se rapporte à une mousse polymère que l'on prépare en dispersant une matière organophile multicouche à l'intérieur d'un bain comportant un polymère oléfinique ou styrénique ayant une fonctionnalité polaire telle qu'au moins une partie du polymère s'intercale entre les couches de particules, et en provoquant l'expansion du polymère avec un agent d'expansion dans des conditions favorables à la formation de la mousse polymère. On peut également disperser la matière organophile multicouche au sein d'un monomère oléfinique ou styrénique que l'on peut ensuite polymériser de façon à former le polymère fondu avant, ou conjointement à, l'étape d'expansion.
