ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A device which detects a displaced position by generating an ul- trasonic signal in a magnetostrictive wire and measuring the propagation time of the signal generated is disclosed. The device includes an exciting coil to generate an ultrasonic signal in the magnetostrictive wire and first and second receiving coils to receive the ultrasonic signal generated in the magnetostrictive wire by the exciting coil. The distance between the exciting coil and each of the first and second receiving coils can be chang- ed in accordance with a mechanical displacement. Circuitry is provided for producing a signal representative of the mechanical displacement by computing two signals related to the time widths required for the generated ultrasonic signal to reach the first and second receiving coils.
