23 ABSTRACT: A layer of liquid crystal is present between two supporting plates of a display device and a large number of picture electrodes arranged in rows and columns are provided on one supporting plate. Strip-shaped row electrodes are provided between the rows or picture elec- trodes. Each row electrodes can be contacted with a row electrode by means of a micromechanical leaf spring. A large number of picture electrodes are also provided on the supporting plate. Strip-shaped column electrodes are provided between the columns of picture electrodes. The picture electrodes form the picture elements of the dis- play device. The micromechanical leaf springs provide the liquid crystal with a sufficiently steep threshold with respect to the applied voltage and provided the liquid crystal with a memory. As a result of this the number of lines to be driven of the display device can be extended.
