A liquid-crystal display screen comprises a backing layer (17) acting as a light guide for activating light; a liquid-crystal layer (29) containing cells which when suitably addressed allow light to pass from the backing layer through the cell; and an emitting layer containing phosphor-type elements (35, 37, 39) corresponding to the cells, for emitting display light when activating light reaches them. For reducing crosstalk and increasing output there are means (47; 49; 77, 81; 87; 87a) for collimating the activating light towards the phosphor-type elements. The invention allows a variety of configurations to be used, such as birefringent LC displays with side-lighting, and FE liquid crystals in scattering mode. FE LC displays can be produced having a grey scale, using part-time addressing and phosphor persistence.
