ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method and apparatus are disclosed for efficiently distributing a plurality of color sample points in a color palette throughout a multi-dimensional color space. A display device is provided for generating rows and columns of picture elements, each picture element having a selected color from the color palette associated therewith. A predetermined number of color points from the color palette are distributed throughout the color space in a hexagonal crystalline structure wherein the maximum distance between any selected color within the color space and the nearest color sample point in the color palette is minimized for a specified number of color sample points. A processor is then utilized to select a color point from within the color palette for each picture element in the display. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, selected sample points in the color palette are located at the boundaries of the color space in order to provide more brilliant colors.
