A replaceable filter element and lid assembly for a fuel filter. The present invention provides a replaceable filter element and removably attached lid for a fuel filter of the type having a substantially cylindrical housing with an open end and a end with a standpipe extending from the closed end of the housing. A valve is situated within the upper end of the standpipe which can be downwardly depressed into the standpipe to open the valve when the lid is attached to the filter housing. The lid includes a projection which extends into the standpipe, as well as a mechanism by which the lid can be attached to the replaceable filter element such that the replaceable filter element is removed every time the lid is removed. Moreover, the replaceable filter element and lid can be discarded every time the filter element is discarded.
