A B S T R A C T There is provided a process for the preparation of substantially water-insoluble granules of volatilized silica by first mixing a predetermined amount of volatil- ized silica with 40 to 60% by weight of water and from 1 to 3% by weight of an alkaline earth metal oxide and when a thick slurry is obtained, adding thereto from 10 to 50% of the initial amount of volatilized silica and continuing the mixing until hard granules are obtained.
