A heavy hydrocarbon is rendered pipelineable by hydroconverting the heavy hydrocarbon under conditions sufficient to obtain a product oil of lowered viscosity and an API gravity suitable for pipelining and thereafter adding a diluent modified hydrocarbon to the product oil in an amount sufficient to stabilize the product oil against asphaltene phase separation and when phase separated asphaltene is present to dissolve the phase separated asphaltenes.

On rend un hydrocarbure lourd transportable par pipeline par hydroconversion de cet hydrocarbure dans des conditions permettant d'obtenir un produit pétrolier de viscosité plus faible et de densité API propice au transport par pipeline, après quoi on ajoute un hydrocarbure diluant modifié au produit pétrolier en quantité suffisante pour stabiliser ce dernier et empêcher la séparation de la phase d'asphaltènes et, en présence d'une phase d'asphaltènes séparée, dissoudre cette dernière.
