An improved process for the chemical decontamination of large volume (small surface to volume ratios) components contaminated with uranium. Chemical cleaning solvent made up from a unique combination of a chelating agent, ammonium carbonate, ammonium hydroxide, and hydrogen peroxide is applied in a foam state. The application temperature ranges up to 150°F, but is particularly effective at room temperatures. A surfactant added to the solution acts as a foaming agent. The prepared solution is foamed and transferred into the component so that foam fills all voids in the component. As the foam condenses, the solvent wets the surfaces and dissolves the uranium. Condensed foam is collected and returned to the foam generator for reuse.
