MW/JLB/9OB133 ABSTRACT DISSOLVING GAS IN A LIQUID Carbonated ale is pumped by pump 50 through a device 52 for dissolving a mixture of carbon dioxide and nitrogen therein. A resulting turbulent stream of ale containing bubbles of nitrogen and carbon dioxide flows through a chiller 54. The ale leaves the chiller 54 in the form of a foam. The foam is allowed to subside in a tank 56 in which the ale is held under a nitrogen pressure for at least ten minutes. The ale substantially free of foam is passed to a filler 64 from which it is charged into flexible, thin-walled cans which are then closed. In each can, after its closure, dissolved gas comes out of solution to create therein a superatmospheric internal pressure that resists deformation of its walls during normal handling.
