A distant safety lighting system for boats, comprising a light engine providing illumination to an optical cable connected thereto, and a bumper guard surrounding the gunwale of a boat having a recess therein for receiving the optical cable, such that the optical cable forms a substantially continuous illuminated loop surrounding the boat. The illuminated loop provides a visually discernable profile of the boat for identification at night.
