The distillation plant comprises a column (1) and a heat pump (4,5) which operates between a sump vaporiser (3) and an exhaust vapour condenser (2) of the column. The heat pump is substitutable by devices (6, 7) which can be switched to the sump vaporiser and the exhaust vapour condenser when required. These substituting devices comprise devices (6 and 7 respectively) for the production of vapour or the provision of a coolant respectively as well as connection means (63, 63', 72, 72'). The coolants can be liquids (water) or gases (air).
