A data transfer system has a plurality of I/O ports, a data bus connected to the I/O ports to permit data transfer therebetween, and an arrangement for selectively authorizing any one of the I/O ports to transfer data onto the data bus in accordance with a priority number so that only one port transfers data onto the bus at a time. A dedicated arbitration bus is connected to the I/O ports, and priority numbers are exchanged between the ports over the dedicated arbitration bus to permit the port priority to be dynamically changed.
