A switching fabric system for routing data is provided. The switching fabric system comprises an input port for receiving data, a crossbar ingress processing unit having a receiving end and a sending end, an interconnecting crossbar having a first end and a second end, a crossbar egress processing unit having a receiving end and a sending end, and an output port for sending the data out of the switching fabric system. The crossbar ingress processing unit receives data from the input port and sends data to the interconnecting crossbar. The crossbar egress processing unit receives data from the interconnecting crossbar, stores data, and sends data to the output port. The switching fabric system may be provided without either of the ingress or egress processing unit, where the interconnecting crossbar is connected to either the corresponding input or output port.
