A distributed LSR sends data from a first edge LSR, acorss a non-MPLS network, to a second edge LSR, thereby enabling a non-MPLS network to interface transparently with MPLS networks. This enables a VPN to use a public network to communicate from one portion of the network to another remote portion. The distributed LSR includes an ingress gateway logically positioned between the first edge LSR and the non-MPLS network. This ingress gateway receives label requests from the first edge LSR. These label requests are multicast to several egress gateways. At least one egress gateway sends a message back indicating that it can transmit data to the destination. In response, the ingress gateway designates that egress gateway to be a designated gateway. The egress gateway then establishes a tunnel through non-MPLS network to the ingress gateway.

Cette invention concerne un routeur de commutation d'~tiquettes distribu~ (Label Switching Router/ LSR) qui envoie des donn~es provenant d'un premier LSR de bord, via un r~seau ~ non-multi-protocole de commutation d'~tiquettes (Multi Portocol Label Switching/MPLS) ~ un second LSR de bord, ce qui permet ~ un r~seau non-MPLS d'avoir une interface transparente avec des r~seaux MPLS. Ainsi un r~seau priv~ virtuel (VPN) a la possibilit~ d'utiliser un r~seau public pour communiquer entre une partie du r~seau et une autre partie ~loign~e. Le LSR distribu~ comprend une passerelle d'entr~e positionn~e logiquement entre le premier LSR de bord et le r~seau non-MPLS. Cette passerelle d'acc­s re×oit des demandes d'~tiquettes du premier LSR de bord. Ces demandes sont multidiffus~es vers plusieurs passerelles de sortie. Au moins une passerelle de sortie retourne un message indiquant qu'elle est en mesure d'acheminer des donn~es ~ destination. En r~ponse, la passerelle d'entr~e retient cette passerelle de sortie comme passerelle d~sign~e. La passerelle de sortie ~tablit alors un tunnel vers la passerelle d'entr~e au travers du r~seau non-MPLS.
