The present invention relates to telecommunication systems that facilitate distributed access to voice and data communications (in particular PBX/Centrex and POTS services). A gateway is connected to a PBX or Centrex switch which puts speech and call control signals originating from the PBX or Centrex switch into Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) cells and sends them to an ATM network. The ATM network transports the cells to a Digital Subscriber Loop Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). The DSLAM provides an interface between the ATM network and a Digital Subscriber Loop (DSL) channel connected to the customer premises. A Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) reconstitutes the speech and call control signals and sends them to a telephone set and/or computer device attached thereto. Since the speech samples and call control signals originate with the customer's PBX or Centrex switch, the telecommuter and/or small branch office can use the same telephone set, same dial plan, same call features and same low-cost long-distance calling plan as colleagues back at the head office.
